Two weeks ago, Nashville-based Windy Hill Spirits Inc. completed its fundraising. The company is now finishing preparations to launch its American Born Moonshine products this summer. In January, Windy Hill had raised a reported $2.5 million as a part of a $5 million offering.
The company was founded a year ago by former Notre Dame quarterback Patrick Dillingham and former U.S. Marine Corps. Captain Sean Koffel. The business partners are both from Northern California, but are happy to be in Nashville because they recognize its entrepreneurial potential.
“We think Nashville is the best place in America to start a company today. It’s exceptionally pro-business and has a long history of being a town where people can chase and accomplish their dreams,” Koffel said in a news release. “It’s also extremely important to us that we honor the American moonshiners of the last three centuries, and making our product in the South, where the moonshine tradition was born, will always be at the core of our brand.”
The founding of Windy Hill Spirits Inc. was inspired by the stories of friends and fellow marines that grew up in and around the Appalachian Mountains. Dillingham and Koffel spent the past year traveling through the South—especially the Appalachians—hearing legends of moonshining and bootlegging and gaining an appreciation for the craft’s history.
