Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two widely hyped up shopping days that follow Thanksgiving. A new campaign is now encouraging yet another shopping day for those who like to tackle their holiday shopping head on after the Thanksgiving feast has come and gone–while at the same time support local businesses and even score some free shopping money!
Small Business Saturday, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, is a shopping day that hopes to bring increased business and support to small businesses that often struggle to compete with the big Black Friday sales offered at large, corporate stores.
The idea came from American Express, who estimates that for ever $100 spend at a locally owned business, $68 of that is returned to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. Thus they have begun to encourage their customers to “shop small,” and idea was born that grew larger than what was initially expected.
The event, which is only a few years old, has already seen notable success. Amex reported a 28% increase from the previous year at small businesses that accept Amex credit cards. With the number of participating organizations bigger than ever, the success rate is expected to increase. More than 200 organizations have signed on to sponsor the event and so far over 1.5 million people have friended Small Business Saturday on Facebook.
What makes Small Business Saturday a day you won’t want to miss? Perhaps because for the day, customers can get a one-time $25 statement credit when eligible American Express cards are registered and used for a purchase of $25 or more at a small business. Small businesses win too, with $100 in free Facebook advertising and an assortment of free tools to market their companies.
Become a fan of the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. For every person that likes the page, American Express will donate $1 to Girls Inc., an entrepreneurship organization for young women. The page can also help guide you in finding participating retailers near you. (Input your zip code to find retailers that accept Amex cards as well as a search to locate small businesses near you.)
In the Nashville area, many downtown Franklin retailers will be participating as well as Nashville Clothing Co., besides those, if it is a locally owned, small business and they accept Amex cards, you will receive your $25 credit if you spend at least $25 there on a registered Amex card.
Kudos to American Express for supporting local business and encouraging others to do the same. Happy shopping!
