Aubrey Bean has been serving up Texas style barbecue brisket since he opened his first BBQ joint in 2002. He has operated at various locations over the years, but hasn’t had a restaurant in Nashville for years. While the Judge Bean’s BBQ location in Brentwood is still busy, Bean shared with the Nashville Post that he sold his stake to his partners after recovering from a heart attack. After recuperating and gaining back his health, Judge began his latest venture, called “The Judge’s Vinegarroon”, which opened a couple weeks ago at 1805 Church Street. This location has been home to many concepts, most recently the late Sportstown BarBQ.
For those not familiar with Western lore, a vinegarroon is a whiptail scorpion, and it was also the name of notorious lawman Judge Roy Bean’s original settlement in West Texas. Although Bean is gradually releasing the full menu, he’s already serving up his signature beef brisket and other goodies, like smoked half-chicken and the popular shrimp Diablo skewers. A new item to the menu will be Bean’s steaks. To make his steaks better than they have been in the past, Bean is sourcing the beef locally from Triune. Bean is still cooking up familiar items, including the spicy cowboy beans enhanced with bits of brisket and the comfortable no-frills dining room with red-and-white tablecloths. Beer and liquor are served, and there’s a front patio that will be handy once the weather cools down. A website for The Judge’s Vinegarroon is in progress, but in the meantime you can visit the restaurant’s Facebook page. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with live music on Thursdays (source) (pictures).
