Middle Tennessee to get Second Area Code

Nashville will soon be home to two area codes. The 615 area code is beginning to run out of numbers, so a second one will be added by the end of 2013. This will result in ten-digit dialing for everyone, even those making local calls. The new area code has not yet been decided, but it will apply to anyone getting a new telephone number in Middle Tennessee. The policy of starting a new area code for people moving to the area is easier than dividing existing phone numbers into old and new area codes, forcing many people and businesses to change their phone numbers. It’s not uncommon for major metropolitan areas to have multiple area codes, and cell phone users are already accustomed to ten-digit dialing. The new area code signifies growth in Nashville and the surrounding areas toward becoming one of the major metropolitan areas in America.
