Hillsboro Village is an area near Vanderbilt and Belmont comprised of apartments and vintage homes that are only three miles southwest of downtown Nashville. Commonly known as “The Village,” this neighborhood is one of Nashville’s few remaining collections of neighborhood merchants.

Hillsboro Village began to take shape in 1920, when two grocery stores and a pharmacy opened alongside the trolley line that ran down Hillsboro Road (21st Avenue). Residential houses in the area were primarily built between 1910 and 1940.  House styles include bungalows, tudors, cottages, and foursquare homes with strong neighborhood associations.  Today, prices of homes typically range from around $250,000 up to over a million dollars.  This neighborhood has an entire downtown square’s worth of shops and restaurants packed into a mere tenth of a mile on 21st Avenue from Wedgewood to Acklen Avenue.

A merchant of Hillsboro Village said it best when they said, “Customers can do their banking; have shoes repaired; fill a prescription; have hair cut or styled; buy jewelry, antiques, artwork, flowers, clothes, or gifts; have copies made; take in a movie or play; get a car repaired or fill it with gas; eat any and all meals; and get a passport all in one area.”

On a typical weekend morning, people passing by will notice an immense string of people wrapped around Pancake Pantry, a Nashville tradition. Trendy coffeehouse and café Fido moved into a defunct Hillsboro Street pet store but kept the original logo and theme tied to the business.  Celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Taylor Swift have been spotted at this trendy spot habitually. Clothing and house wares boutiques such as Posh and Retropolitan are located beside the award-winning local brewery Bosco’s.

The non-profit Belcourt Theater has been open for over 75 years and is one of Nashville’s hidden wonders.  It has a reputation of bringing the best and most unusual performing arts to Nashville, including its small yet precisely chosen selection of Indie films and plays. Enjoy the annual Art of The Village and Sidewalk Sale one Saturday every spring spotlighting the works of Nashville’s own designers and visual artists.

Another fun even is the Hillsboro Village Art Walk, which hosts and features Nashville’s artists, bands, authors, and food.  The event takes place on the first Thursday of every month year-round, rain or shine.  David Baldwin of the Pancake Pantry said it best when he said, “Even though the village changes, the people are still friendly… we’re one big happy family.”
