Hillsboro Village is gearing up to receive some needed external improvements. Streetscape enhancements are underway to improve sidewalks, add bicycle racks, repair damaged brick and make the overall area more aesthetically pleasing and pedestrian friendly.

Planting spaces between Wedgewood Ave. and Acklen will be expanded as well as recommendations to improve the landscaping at the Magnolia Blvd/21st Ave. S. intersection. This project is one of a larger master plan for Hillsboro Village improvements and enhancements.

Last year a pedestrian count was completed by the Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization who counted 798 pedestrians and bicyclists out in Hillsboro Village during their counting times of 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. These changes will create the opportunity for more pedestrians to enjoy walking the streets of Hillsboro Village, one of Nashville’s beloved neighborhoods.

The $167,000 project is funded in part by a federal transportation enhancement grant with matching metro funds. Construction crews will be working on one block at a time to minimize any disruption to area businesses and expect construction to be completed by late summer.

A local developer, Paul McRedmond, has submitted plans for a new three-story mixed-use project. McRedmond is the owner of the lot at the northeast corner of 12th Avenue and Montrose which was formerly a lawn and garden store. He purchased the lot for $68,000 in 1996.

His plans are for a residential/retail project which will sit two blocks south of the aforementioned 12South Flats, which are expected to be completed next spring.

The project will require a variance from the Board of Zoning Appeals as it exceeds the height requirement for the area. McRedmond is also asking to set the building back farther from the street than current zoning allows. Planning officials are recommending approval of that request with a wider sidewalk than submitted in the original plans.

The Color Run is coming to Nashville this fall!

What is the Color Run, you ask? The Color Run is a one of a kind experience that is less about speed and more about enjoying a color crazy day with your friends and family. The run is suitable for individuals of all abilities, from Olympic athletes to casual morning walkers. The 5k is sure to be the most enjoyable one you’ve ever completed, full of fun, laughter, and of course, COLOR!

The race rules are as follows, taken directly from the Color Run website:

Rule #1 All participants are welcome… fast, slow, runner, walker, old, and young.
Rule #2 White shirt dress code at the official start line and ready to roll no later than 9am sharp!
Rule #3 Completely colored Willy Wonka goodness at the finish.

President for the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors Kendra Cooke said the trends are the best the area has seen since June 2010, which was the initial deadline for the First Time Buyer Tax Credit. “While some of the increase can be attributed to normal seasonal trends, the high number of closings is a clear indication that the real estate market in this region is showing significant improvement,” she explained, adding “the continuation of historically low interest rates, increasing economic confidence and increasing rental rates are all factors having a positive impact on real estate sales.”

There were 2,186 home closings reported for in April 2012, according to figures provided by GNAR. This figure represents a 25 percent from the 1,747 closings reported for April 2011. Year-to-date closings are also up compared to 2011 with 7,041. That is a 24.5 percent increase compared to the 5,655 closings reported through April 2011.

England Park on Delray Drive Lane is named after Andrew and Martha England. The park was built by over 100 Make-A-Smile volunteers who installed picnic tables, playground swings and a walking trail. The park was built in an area that was once submerged by flood water that destroyed the homes that were located on the property.

Last Thursday, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean joined together with city leaders to dedicate England Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Biscuit Love, owned by a husband and wife team of chefs, made its debut in Nashville back in April, serving up gourmet style, made-from-scratch sandwiches. Most everything is made in-house, including their signature biscuits, gravy, mustard and even pickles.

No Southern food is left unserved, with menu items including the Princess,  Nashville-style hot chicken served on a biscuit, topped with pickles, mustard and honey. Build-your-own biscuits are also an option, with ingredients to choose from ranging from local bacon to Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheddar to Olive & Sinclair chocolate gravy. Yep, they have it all!

The duo behind the new truck are Karl and Sarah Worley, native Nashvillians who both attended culinary school at Johnson and Wales in Denver.

The Listening Room is a well-known music venue here in Nashville that is all about good taste – in music and in food! We know Nashville is a city that loves its music, but Nashville is also a city that appreciates culinary talent.
