Harpeth River | Nashville Waterfront

This week marks the final week of our Nashville Waterfront blog series. We hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have and hopefully sparked a trip to a lake or river for some fun in the sun and in the water!

Join us today as we explore the Harpeth River here in Nashville. 115 miles long, the Harpeth River is a major stream of north-central Middle Tennessee and a major tributary of the Cumberland River. It is also part of the Mississippi River Watershed. It rises in Rutherford County and its stream flows westerly into Franklin, Tenn. in Williamson County. It is both the source of the area’s drinking water supply and main site of sewage disposal. The Harpeth River also forms the line between Dickson and Cheatham Counties.

An interesting fact about the Harpeth River is that the origin of the name “Harpeth” has been controversial throughout history. Area legend has often cited that it was named for the infamous outlaw brothers of the early 19th century, the Harp Brothers, “Big Harp,” and “Little Harp.” These stories are false, however, because the name Harpeth exists on maps and documents which predate the brothers’ fame. A late 18th century map published in London supposably shows the stream as the “Fairpath” and there has continued to be dissension about whether the name is of Native American origin, or possibly even a corruption of the common English name Harper.

The Harpeth River is very popular for recreational use, with one of its main uses being for canoeing along with boating, fishing, biking and picnicking. The lower portion of the river is designated as a “scenic river” under the Tennessee Scenic Rivers Act.
